I am a biracial male living in Prince Georges County Maryland. I've lived with my mother for as long as I can remember in a predominately black area. I hear horror stories about biracial kids growing up and not feeling accepted by either group and I can't totally relate. I've had friends of many races who didn't seem to care what ethnicity I was and when I told them it didn't seem to make a big difference. My friends (and even some teachers) dubbed me "White Boy" through my teenage years, but I just felt it made me special in a way. I am now in my third year at the University of Maryland at College Park and I seem to have no ill effects from growing up "mixed". Even though I was raised by an all black family, lived in a predominately black area, and attended predominately black school, I still acknowledge that I am half white when asked and when filling in the little "race bubbles". I hope this will help people understand that it is possible to grow up biracial and not face the hardships that I have heard so much about. I also hope that people who are hesitant to have biracial children due to fear that the child will be outcast will see that each case is different and that a biracial child can live a normal life.
