Althea Anne Allen
I am a 29 year old Biracial mother of one living in Louisville, Kentucky. My mother is White and my father Black. I am an only child and grew up in an all white neighborhood with all white schools. All of this was crucial to my identity growing up because having no siblings and only white friends made it very difficult to discover and assert a Biracial identity.
In fact, it was not until I went to graduate school to major in African American Studies that I was able to finally externalize all those pieces of my Self that had remained hidden or latent. My experiences within the Black community were different but the feelings were the same thus allowing me (forcing me?) to claim and assert what and who was inside. I did my Master's thesis on the notion of the Biracial Experience, and I was specifically concerned with how Biracial adults perceive themSelves and what being Biracial means to them.
I've since continued my research on a personal and professional level and have enjoyed communicating with many of you. I am always happy to participate in research or just talk, so please feel free to email me. Blessings!
