Jesse Howard, founder and lead designer of Matiko, got his humble start in retail. As an employee in a Maui surf shop, Howard began his informal education on the wide world of retail and wholesale, but something else happened too. He was bitten by the fashion bug. He forged ahead in his design aspirations, first opening two small retail stores for men’s casual and surf wear. After completing Business school in Los Angeles, Howard decided to focus his attention on the feet. His first thought was to create a line of shoes for skaters and surfers, but these were not frequent buyers. His current Socal setting lead way to an even better idea: “L.A. women collect more shoes than there are days in the year.” In 2003, Howard launched Matiko, a line of women’s footwear specifically geared towards women between the ages of 18-35. It’s easy to spot celebrity Matiko sightings with the likes of Lindsey Lohan, Halle Berry, and Reese Witherspoon strutting around Hollywood in a pair Matiko shoes.
