MY SHOES WEDDING
On September 16, 2000 Henry Norcom
and
Sandra Bishop tied the marriage knot.
They met in our support group and decided to make a life together as husband
and wife after a year of engagement. Congratulations and Best Wishes
For Continued Happiness!
Their romance and wedding can be viewed at http://hometown.aol.com/slbnorc/myhomepage/wedding.html
Update: I hear there is a baby Norcom on the way, to arrive in
March, 2002.
My Shoes is a support group in cyberspace hosted by clinical
psychologist Dr. Juanita Brooks for multiracial children, adolescents and
adults who have a white appearance.
We have some unique issues that only we truly understand. Here are a few excerpts from our members:
Most of my life, I never felt as though I "fit in"
anywhere. I was always "too white" for the black people and "too black"
for the white people...The ignorance of the "one drop rule" labeled me
black for the majority of my life, but I could not ignore the rest of my
heritage.
...I am half Japanese and half Caucasion and I too,
"look all white"...it's every other day that someone asks "What are you?"...Sometimes
when I tell people my racial heritage they still say, "Yeah but you're
really White." I guess they didn't hear me.
It's funny how the Black race and the White race treat me...White
people treat me like I have all the answers for the Black race, and the
Black race treats me as if I purposely picked my light color, good hair
and 'proper' way of speaking just to spite them.
I am forty-something, of mixed parentage...Blacks, whites
and "others" commonly assume that I am Latin American, Iranian/middle Eastern...
In many cases, that assumption is manifested in the form of total strangers
initiating a conversation with me in Spanish, Arabic, Farsi...I
have concluded that, with all of the challenges we face, there are also
many advantages in being able to travel in so many different circles and
serve as a "bridge" to different, otherwise separate groups...
